Art is where I come alive and where I invite others to do the same

Toronto-based artist Anne Segal creates emotionally resonant art that blends mixed media, photography, and a reverence for nature to awaken joy, presence, and reflection.

Welcome!

Through my art, I enter a space — which is really a process of co-creation — where surprise and spontaneity reside.

On the best studio days, I experience a flow state (a term coined by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi), where I’m immersed in creativity for its own sake. Time and ego melt away, and every breath, action, and choice feel in perfect harmony.

Some days don’t flow that way! For me, it’s about accepting both.

The Creative Process is the Journey

My paintings communicate the invigorating journey I travel while immersed in the creative process.

I believe everyone can benefit from giving themselves permission to create.

I use a variety of mixed media, balancing intuitive experimentation alongside formal considerations. Painting immerses me in a world of possibility and risk-taking — sometimes leading to frustration, other times to satisfaction.

With a background in psychology, I’m deeply inspired by the potential of the creative impulse as a tool for self-reflection, healing, and vitality.

“I believe creativity is a pathway to vitality.”

In Conversation With the Natural World

My greatest inspiration comes from the presence and reverence I feel in the natural world. From flowers, plants, birds, and trees, to vast mountains and open skies.

That sense of wonder and beauty continues to guide the mood, tone, and energy of each piece I create.

Exploration, Layering, and Listening

My approach blends painting, collage, and drawing — each piece builds up in layers of paint, print, texture, and experimentation. Some layers are left intact, others get sanded back to reveal traces of their history.

Improvisation plays a central role, often guided by an intuitive sense of listening and responding.

Photography is also part of my creative toolkit. Whether I’m capturing the macro texture of a flower or the quiet geometry of a landscape, it’s another way of exploring the richness of visual language.
